UPCOMING EXHIBITION: 2 October 2026 – 17 January 2027
Looking Away brings together the work of around forty women artists from Latvia, the Baltic region, and beyond, focusing on art created during the first two decades of the twenty-first century. Presented at Zuzeum Art Museum in Riga, the exhibition draws primarily from the Zuzāns Collection and brings together diverse artistic practices to form an evolving portrait of the period.
The exhibition takes its title and conceptual starting point from British visual culture theorist Irit Rogoff’s 2005 essay Looking Away – Participations in Visual Culture. Rather than focusing exclusively on the artwork itself, the exhibition invites attention towards the circumstances, relationships, and environments in which artworks are created.
For the exhibition, the participating artists were invited to engage in individual conversations with the curators, making their perspectives and experiences an integral part of the presentation. Alongside each selected artwork, the artists contribute contextual elements that offer glimpses into the worlds surrounding its creation. These may include personal notes, objects, materials, photographs, or other traces from their lives and studios.
Skuja Braden participate in the exhibition alongside a wide range of women artists working across different generations, mediums, and approaches. Their work forms part of this broader exploration of how artists represent themselves and how the personal, social, and creative circumstances surrounding an artwork can become part of its meaning.
The exhibition also includes an accessibility project developed to enable visitors with visual impairments to experience selected artworks through touch and other accessible formats, extending the exhibition’s exploration of participation and the ways art can be encountered.
